The options available for genealogical research on the Internet are vast and changing constantly. The following sites are the ones we think will be most helpful, as we find others they will be added. Many of the sites include “how to get started” articles. Several of the general genealogy sites include links specific to African American genealogical research.

A large categorized and cross-referenced directory of sites useful for genealogical research, with hundreds of thousands of links.

Family Search
FamilySearch is the largest genealogy organization in the world. For over 100 years, FamilySearch has been actively gathering, preserving, and sharing genealogical records worldwide.

Footnote has made available through their partnership with the National Archives original source documents that include information about an individual’s birth, immigration history, marriage, occupation, death, and other genealogical research data.

a genealogical data site with instruction materials and reference support.

Myheritage.com
This site focuses in upon networking and genealogical community support.

Myfamily.com
MyFamily.com began in 1998 by a group who wanted a better way to stay connected with their families. It’s a shared, private space designed specifically for families with tech newbies and geeks alike.

New England Ancestors
The website of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the oldest genealogical society in the country. Primary focus includes New England ancestry.

Roots Web
The Internet’s oldest and largest free genealogical community site.

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database
Free searchable website of more than 35,000+ slaving voyages between 1514 and 1866; includes 67,000+ names of enslaved Africans

Us Gen Web
The USGenWeb Project is a group of volunteers working together to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. This Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free genealogy access for everyone.

World Vital Records
WorldVitalRecords provides its members with access to more than 1,500,000,000+ names in 12,000+ databases.
